Requirements:

  • Must be U.S. Citizen.
  • Two (2) years of experience within the past three years assisting with corneal refractive surgeries, including PRK and LASIK procedures, patient selection, and care of corneal refractive surgery patients.
  • Education:  Complete an ophthalmology technician or an optometric technician course
  • Certification:  Possess and maintain current certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology or a completed a formal ophthalmic training program of the United Stated Armed Forces.
  • Possess basic knowledge of ophthalmic screening techniques with knowledge of ophthalmic pathology, pharmacology, optics, photography, and surgical techniques.
  • Certification for operating the Excimer Lasers used in the Corneal Refractive Surgery Program.


Duties:

  - Administer vision therapy programs prescribed by the optometrist/ophthalmologist.
  - Perform pre-op, surgical, and post-op care of refractive surgery patients to include auto-refraction and auto keratometry, interpreting refraction with both automated and manual phoropters, basic ocular            motility tests, pupil exam, ophthalmic photograph, fluorescein angiography, glare testing, wavefront testing, analysis, Goldmann tonometry, pupilometry, excimer, and femtosecond refractive lasers and            assisting the surgeon during refractive surgery.
 - Responsible for preparation of the corneal refractive surgery suite and calibration of the excimer and femtosecond lasers. Verify the proper working order of all refractive lasers and assist the surgeon in the     corneal refractive surgery procedures (Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) and Laser-Assisted In situ Keratomileusis (LASIK).
 - Prepare refractive surgery procedures charts with patient information and test results.
 - Perform data entry into AHLTA, CHCS, and various outcome database software programs.
 - Perform automated and subjective refractions using the Marco Epic system or manual phoropter.
 - Direct the flow of patients: Obtain medical and personal data for patient’s conditions, including ocular examination; Arrange for laboratory tests, ophthalmic photography, outpatient studies, patient                     admissions and surgery as requested by the physician. Alleviate patient and family concerns by explaining diagnostic procedures and referring specific questions to the provider.
 - Screen walk-in patients, emergency patients, and telephone calls from patients and referring physicians.
 - Inspect and prepare surgical instruments, materials, and equipment to ensure they are in stock, clean/sterile, and in proper working condition.
 - Decontaminate, clean, and prepare surgical instruments by the hospital's Sterile Processing Department for sterilization. Assist with minor office surgery and laser treatments. Scrub or circulate ophthalmic surgical procedures in the main operating room surgery as required. 
 - Inventory assigned examination rooms to ensure adequate supplies are in stock. This shall be coordinated with the supply officer of the refractive surgery program to ensure all supply requests are met.
 - Perform entry-level triaging of patient complaints either over the phone or within the clinic environment.
- The HCW shall be responsible for preparations, including pre-surgical and post-surgical, and restocking of the refractive surgical suite. The refractive surgery suite is a restricted area; therefore, only authorized personnel are allowed in the surgery suite area. The Ophthalmology Technicians/Technologist s are responsible for wiping down the suite on surgery days. The Ophthalmology Technician/Technologist s are responsible for restocking and wiping down the counter surfaces of the refractive surgery suite.
 - The HCW shall operate the following equipment used in the Ophthalmology Department; (1) Intralase Femtosecond, (2) Allegretto Excimer Laser, and    (3) the VISX StarS4 Excimer Laser.
 
Start date: 

  • As soon as possible pending Federal Security Clearance process completion (typically 4-6 weeks after initiation)


Schedule:

Services shall be provided Monday through Friday between the hours of 0700 and 1700 hours. Shifts will normally be scheduled for an 8.5 or 9-hour period, to include an uncompensated 30 to 60-minute lunch break, respectively. In no instance will the HCW be required to provide services in excess of 80 hours per two-week period.

Ability to commute:

  • Reliably transportation is required and expected for commuting to and from the work site.
